About SUMA

Since 1982, the Syracuse University Office of Multicultural Advancement (SUMA) has supported and advocated for underrepresented alumni and students. It raises funds for over 50 scholarships and hosts Coming Back Together, the triennial reunion for Black and Latino/a alumni.

Rachel Vassel ’91, G’21
Associate Vice President
Rachel provides leadership of the office, with a focus on strategy, programs, and marketing efforts that increase underrepresented alumni engagement and philanthropic support.

Angela Morales-Patterson
Director of Operations and Partnerships
Angela is responsible for overall unit operations, as well as corporate and foundation partnerships for the Our Time Has Come (OTHC) Scholarship and Leadership program. She is also the editor and chief of Syracuse Manuscript Magazine. In addition, she oversees the distribution of the OTHC scholarship funds.

Director of Alumni Events
Miko develops regional alumni events to ensure continuous, year-round engagement in our top diverse alumni markets. She also leads the planning for CBT reunions, both on campus and regionally, as well as alumni fundraisers and trips.

Assistant Director of Scholarship Programs

Maria administers students experience portion of the Our Time Has Come (OTHC) scholarship  and Leadership program, plans and executes all Multicultural Advancement student events. She is also oversees the department’s social media platforms.
